U.S. Geographical Distribution of Fictional Protagonists

Where did the protagonists created by our 206 American authors live and work? What are the settings for their activities? There were no big surprises. The numbers are not precise because many authors spread their protagonists all round the U.S. and the world. As expected, the biggest locale was the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut Tri-State area with some 75 of our American protagonists (36%). Brooklyn had the largest concentration within that area.

Next-largest was California, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego, with 32 protagonists (15%). After that came Chicago with 13 (6.2 %), Boston with 11 (5.2%) and Florida with 6 (2.9%). Michigan, Texas, Washington, D.C. and Las Vegas showed three protagonists (about 1.4%) each, with the rest scattered in ones and twos from Baltimore and Charlotte to Hawaii (nothing much doing in Alaska or Wyoming, though). In terms of detectives, criminals, and so on, the Jewish map is still concentrated in major cities, but somewhat more spread out than before.
