[Note on Translations from Hebrew to English: The best-known translators of modern Hebrew fiction to English include Hillel Halkin, Nicholas de Lange, Dalya Bilu, Jessica Cohen, Philip Simpson, Sondra Silverston, Stuart Schoffman and Jeffrey M. Green. Among the translators of the present sample of Israel authors, and the authors they translated, are:

• Hillel Halkin (Oz, Yehoshua, Shalev)
• Dalya Bilu (Appelfeld, Gur, Oz, Yehoshua);
• Yardenne Greenspan (Adaf, Eitan, Gutfreund, Keret/Gavron);
• Sondra Silverston (Gundar-Goshen, Nevo);
• Steven Cohen (de Shalit, Hezroni, Mishani);
• Evan Fallenberg (Ben-David, Gur, Gutfreund);
• Sara Kitai (Shoham, Zur);

At least five of the Israeli-born Hebrew authors write their novels directly in English, i.e. Azrieli, Carmon, Dunsky, Mandelman and Tidhar. Another five – Gavron, Hartstein, Yoram Katz, Ofra Oren and Rosenfeld – translate their own works into English.]
