Yonatan Sagiv (1979–2025) – Brilliant Israeli literary scholar and critic and author of three unique detective novels. Was an expert in studies of Shai Agnon and Biblical literature and spent extended periods in New York and London, before returning to Israel in 2021. The protagonist of his popular series was a gay, private detective, Oded Hefer, who solved his classic “whodunit” cases with humour and class. Hefer is often described as a “flamboyant, foul-mouthed,” and unapologetic character who frequents Tel Aviv’s social circles while subverting traditional detective tropes.Sagiv also penned a biography which included a dramatic description of his loss of voice due to a medical condition, an especially serious matter for a lecturer and public intellectual.
