Lawrence W. Raphael

Lawrence W. Raphael (1943–2019, born in Los Angeles) – was a senior Reform Rabbi, widely recognized as a leading expert on Jewish mystery and detective fiction.  He viewed the detective story as a form of “modern midrash”—a way to interpret Jewish tradition and ethics through the lens of a crime and its resolution, extracting deep meaning from subtle details, much like a rabbi interpreting holy texts. He wrote numerous articles and essays on the theme of Jewish identity in detective fiction, examining how Jewish protagonists use their heritage to contend with moral dilemmas. He worked closely with other prominent Jewish mystery writers such as Lev Raphael (no relation), who contributed the story “Your Papers, Please” to his anthologies. 

He explored characters (particularly “rabbi-sleuths”) as outsiders who navigate both Jewish and secular societies, using their unique cultural lens to critique both. His anthologies focus on characters who must solve “mysteries of being” and spiritual identity alongside whodunits. He highlighted the parallels between theology and crime fiction, both of which center on the Conflict between Good and Evil and the pursuit of justice. 

Raphael categorized “Jewish Mysteries” into three sub-categories based on the role of Jewish identity in the plot: “Jewish Protagonist,” where the protagonist is Jewish but it’s a background detail; “Jewish Theme or Setting,” where the plot is centered on Jewish life or history; and “Jewish Law or Ritual,” where the mystery’s resolution relies on Jewish law or ritual, sometimes termed “Modern Midrash”.
