Joseph Heller (born 1923 in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York and died in 1999 in East Hampton, New York) [Born to poor, first-generation Russian-Jewish immigrants. Grew up in a working-class, bilingual household where both Yiddish and English were spoken. Critics directly link his trademark dark, skeptical, and wisecracking humor to his upbringing in the Jewish immigrant community of Coney Island. Maintained a secular, agnostic outlook on faith—inherited from his politically socialist father—despite his deeply ingrained Jewish cultural identity.
